Epi Kardia Literature-based Curriculum using Charlotte Mason Methods

Elizabeth (right) has home schooled her two children for about nine
years. With her daughter, Allyson, studying pre-med at Clemson University on scholarship and striving to
become a PA in the missions’ field, Elizabeth is truly enjoying the opportunity of seeing the fruit of
her labors. Her son, John Paul, follows Allyson by six years and Elizabeth appreciates additional time
with him. With a heart for missions, Elizabeth views her role in Epi Kardia as an opportunity to minister
to other home school families and share with them the joys and challenges that she has experienced
working with her own children. She encourages her children to be light and salt to the world and enjoys
any opportunity she can take to participate in missions ministries along with them.
Even before conceiving the idea of Epi Kardia, Elizabeth utilized the concepts of integrating curriculum with
whole books both in a structured classroom situation and at home with her children. She sees the value of a
classical approach, but longs to maintain a Biblical standard in the process. Epi Kardia was designed with such
methodology in mind.
Elizabeth’s background is as both educator and writer. She enjoys working with parents in a personal way to
promote a love for reading and writing, as well as to encourage them to use their own unique gifts as they
teach their children.

Dana (above left) and her husband, Cameron, who designed the graphics
for Epi Kardia, have home schooled their two children for over 13 years. As with many of us, her
philosophy about teaching has changed somewhat over the years, but she has drawn most heavily from
Charlotte Mason’s teachings. She also has extensively researched different learning styles and multiple
intelligences, incorporating the results into Epi Kardia curriculum.
She passionately feels our primary goal as homeschooling parents is to disciple and mentor our children and
thus ‘raise Godly generations.’ The worldview presented in Epi Kardia reflects this foundational
belief.
An avid reader herself, Dana feels there is no comparison between
textbooks and living books, so wholeheartedly recommends to new homeschooling parents that a
literature-based curriculum is the way to go. Over the years she has observed how well-written literature
has sparked a love of reading and learning in her family, as well as Beth’s.
Cameron and Dana are excited to have graduated their first from the nest! Their daughter, Aliece, is attending
Clemson University on scholarship, majoring in Health Science and hoping to become a Physical Therapist by the
end of her university career. Michael is an 12th grader who enjoys playing electric and acoustic guitar,
leading worship at his youth group and working as a partner in a lawn mowing business.
In her ‘life before homeschooling’, Dana served as a Human Resources Director, counselor, and educator. Like
many of us, she wears several hats and serves her local homeschooling support group, is active in church and
occasionally administers aptitude and standardized tests to adults and children.
