Epi Kardia's High School Public Speaking Curriculum for Homeschool Students

It has been noted that three out of four Americans suffer from some type of speech phobia with public speaking being the number one noted fear. The inability to speak in front of others can prevent your student from being successful in college and  the workplace

The Art of Public Speaking allows you to cover four major types of speeches in a step by step approach:

  • impromptu
  • expository
  • persuasive
  • apologetic

Focusing on examples of some of the most influential speakers in history including Abraham Lincoln, C.S. Lewis, A.W. Tozer, Dwight D. Eisenhower and Martin Luther King, this course leads students through the preparatory steps of giving a speech.

Students will learn to organize their thoughts using such tools as speech maps and note cards. They will also address how to prevent and overcome nervous habits that distract from their speeches. Assessment tools, such as speech forms and rubrics, allow for succinct and specific evaluation for both teachers and students.

Successful completion of this course will allow your student to develop organizational and speaking skills that will benefit him throughout life. As Winston Churchill once said, “We are masters of the unsaid words, but slaves to those we let slip out.” Teaching our students to express themselves articulately will guide them toward mastering their ideas and their words!

Students interested in debate will also find this an excellent preparatory course for speaking in front of others. We do recommend Essay Styles as a prerequisite for this course as it will prepare students for quickly organizing their thoughts in an articulate manner while prepping for a speech.

"I'm still using Epi Kardia and LOVING it! I added one more student this year to the mix, A.! She and I do a more traditional Epi Kardia approach, whereas J. and G. know the drill and are on something like auto pilot with the program. Thank you for your dedication to writing such a fine curriculum.  My family have enjoyed it and been blessed by it time after time.  I still share it with everyone who will listen!"

-Jennifer, mom of 5, CT

"E. is in 4th grade right now and C. is in 1st grade.  I love being able to use Epi Kardia with both of them!  (And we'll be adding L. in kindergarten next year.)  What a blessing this curriculum has been and continues to be for us!  Thanks Dana and Beth!"

--Julie, mom of 5, SC

"I have 4 children and we are using all 4 levels of the program. Just another reason why I love this program! It is flexible enought for me to do just what want with it! :-) "

 --Pam, mom of 4, SC

"The kids and I just finished playing a '20th Century Trivia' board game that A. made after I saw it in the [Preparatory Complete Program] Epi Kardia curriculum. What a great idea! He had to come up with the idea, use history & geography to come up with the categories and then the questions, make the board, paint the board and then make up the rules. It was a great 2-week project!"
